Observers will be well aware that the population of the Corn Bunting Miliaria calandra has declined drastically in recent years and the species now appears to be absent from many of its last-remaining strongholds. No 1994 records were received for the Irish Bird Report and it is conceivable that it is on the verge of extinction as a breeding species in Ireland. The Committee is seriously considering adding the species to the list of those requiring descriptions but, before taking this unprecedented step, we would like to have an accurate assessment of its current status. We would like, therefore, to make a special plea to observers to be on the lookout for this species and to submit all records to their local recorder or directly to the editors of the Irish Bird Report.
